Lawn rectangles

Split an L-shaped or irregular lawn into rectangles that do not overlap. Enter each rectangle once.

Not entered
Which way should the pile run?
Use your turf supplier’s recommended overlap. Enter 0 when cuts meet edge to edge.
0
Use an allowance that suits your layout and site conditions, no default waste is assumed.
0
Infill and perimeter fixings
Confirmed infill instruction
Enter spacing from the confirmed product or installer plan for its pins, nails or screws. No universal frequency is assumed. Internal or seam fixings are separate.
Not entered

The current product page and general installation manual describe infill as optional; the 2018 product sheet gives different infill guidance. Choose the current no-infill application only after confirming the product, or use the manual’s optional acrylic-sand rate of 1.5 lb/sq ft when applicable. Confirm conflicts with the manufacturer. No choice is applied automatically. Perimeter counts cover every entered rectangle separately and can overcount shared edges. Switching length units clears lawn measurements and fixing spacing.

How it works

Enter each non-overlapping lawn rectangle and choose whether the grass pile should run along its length or width. US inputs and outputs use feet and square feet.

The calculator works out the smallest number of strips that cover each across-pile dimension, subtracting the seam overlap you enter. It groups compatible offcuts when their widths fit side-by-side on a 15 ft product roll, then adds your waste allowance.

The result estimates cut lengths and seam tape. It also estimates perimeter fixings from your specified spacing and infill bags from the selected source instruction and actual bag mass. Delivery, prices, underlay and base preparation are separate. Check your selected product instructions before ordering.

Formula

  • Lawn area and strip count

Lawn area = Σ(rectangle length × rectangle width)

Add each non-overlapping rectangle once. The strip count is the smallest whole number whose combined roll widths, less seam overlaps, cover the across-pile dimension.

  • Grass to order and seam tape

Roll area = roll width × grouped cut length × (1 + waste allowance) Seam tape = seam count × seam cut length

Compatible strips are grouped side-by-side only when their widths fit within one sourced roll.

  • Infill and fixings

Infill (lb) = lawn area (sq ft) × selected source rate (lb/sq ft) Bags = ceil(infill ÷ entered bag mass) Perimeter fixings = sum ceil(rectangle perimeter ÷ specified spacing)

The US infill instruction must be explicitly chosen because product sources differ. Maui 60 specifies 1 to 1.5 lb/sq ft. No universal bag mass or fixing frequency is assumed.

  • Feet to metres

    15 ft × 0.3048 m/ft = 4.572 m

The calculator keeps this conversion exact in the product data and rounds values only for display.

Worked example

  1. Measure the lawn

    10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft

Enter one rectangular lawn with each side measuring 10 ft.

  2. Estimate the roll material

    15 ft roll × 10 linear ft = 150 sq ft

It fits across one 15 ft roll. This is the grass area before any waste allowance, with seam overlap set to 0, this layout has no seams.

Assumptions and limits

The roll-width example uses PolyTurf Garden Grass Pet & Play. This does not mean every US supplier uses 15 ft rolls.

Seam overlap and cutting waste are user inputs because suppliers and site layouts differ. Zero waste is the starting value, not a recommendation, enter an allowance suited to the job.

Fixing method and spacing depend on the product, base and installation method. Enter the confirmed perimeter spacing to calculate the quantity; shared rectangle edges can be counted twice, and internal or seam fixings are separate. This is a materials planning estimate, not an installation specification.

The packing estimate groups same-pile-direction strips by width. It does not account for roll defects, color/dye-lot matching, limited stock lengths, or supplier minimum orders. Confirm the cut plan and available length with the seller.

Frequently asked questions

How much artificial grass should I order?

For this cited product example, a 10 ft × 10 ft lawn is 100 sq ft and needs 150 sq ft of roll material before waste. Measure your lawn, plan the pile direction, and add a waste allowance that reflects your cuts.

Do all artificial grass rolls come 15 ft wide?

No. The 15 ft width here is confirmed for the named supplier product only. Check the roll width and available cut lengths for the exact product you plan to buy.

Does the calculator include infill or fixing pins?

The current product page and general installation manual describe infill as optional; the 2018 product sheet gives different infill guidance. Choose the current no-infill application only after confirming the product, or use the manual’s optional acrylic-sand rate of 1.5 lb/sq ft when applicable. Confirm conflicts with the manufacturer. No choice is applied automatically. Perimeter fixing quantities use the spacing you enter from the product or installer plan.

Can offcuts always be reused?

Only compatible strips with matching pile direction and widths that fit the same roll can share a cut length in this estimate. Check dye lots, stock lengths and the actual installation layout with the supplier.
